a man who never learns how to be free

David Gray was a great concert last night. I really wish that I had been able to see him in a more intimate setting. The Northrup Auditorium is pretty big, and people were whooping and hollering like they were at an AC/DC concert, sort of surreal. He does this adorable thing with his head, bouncing it all around from side to side, very cute. And he has a great smile. Guess I have a little crush. Thanks out to Jason for a wonderful evening.
Being at the concert made me think back to some of the concerts I have attended, at least the ones I can remember. The first "rock" concert I went to was the Carpenters. My parents took me to see them at Keinhan's Music Hall in Buffalo NY in 1974. I remember what I was weraing, navy boot cut slacks, a white shirt with romeo sleeves and a red vest with gold circles on the small pockets...I was all about preparing for the upcoming bicentenial (and my coming out of the closet). My mother was wearing a floor length quilted patchwork plaid skirt and a silky top, I forget the color, while my dad had a tan corduroy blazer with patches on the elbows and plaid slacks, he was sporting big sideburns at the time and I believe smoking a pipe. I remember nothing of the concert.
My second concert was a true rock extravaganza. In 1977 I saw the Bee Gees' Spirit Having Flown tour. I went with Trisha Isherwood and her mother. The people in front of us were smoking "weed", according to Trisha's mother, so we had to change seats after she complained to an usher. i bought a tan t-shirt that had BeeGees in sparkling letters, I think I would be willing to take a punch in the face to have that shirt today. They had a stage that lit up like the Saturday Night Fever set and Andy Gibb opened for them singing his hit Shadow Dancin'. It was awesome.
Memories...
