Medallions

In the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, for the reader who is not aware of this tradition, we mark periods of sobriety with medallions. This is a nice way of acknowledging time passing for the alcoholic who continues to work the steps and grow in their sobriety, but more importantly it act to show newcomers that through working the steps it is possible to have extended periods of recovery. I can remember when I first started going to meeting and saw people getting 30 day, and more, medallions. The idea that people could string together day, weeks months, even years of time without using drugs or alcohol was unreal.
Today my friend Dan will recieve his 18 month medallion at the Gratitude meeting. This is Dans home group, so you know that you will find him there every tuesday night. Stop by and acknowledge this milestone in his life. I know that I am thankful to have him around.

Isnt it amazing to see, watch those that come after us achieve sobriety, change, grow, and help those that come after them? I remember my 18 month chip. What an amazing feat!

I'll celebrate my 2 years next month. To this day, the most significant chip/medallion I have received was my one month milestone.
Why? Because it convinced me that I could really do this thing. I remember after my first few days of sobriety, telling my partner that I was going to try for a 1 month chip. Just like I had seen someone else receive earlier that day.
I will definitely stop by Dan's place to give him congrats, but he hasn't posted in a few days.
