Tushy the wonder kitty
How could I neglect to mention the greatest highlight of the Boston trip? Meeting Tushy!

I'm Back

What a great weekend. I love Boston, always have and it was a wonderful experience to see it as a sober guy.
Friday I flew into Logan around noon. The flight from Chicago to Boston was filled with a middle school orchestra from Nebraska. Thank God for my ipod!
Met my friend Mike's girlfriend Laura outside the Fleet Center and went back to Mikes to drop off the bags. Laura is a trip! We spent the day spending on Newbury Street. Good times, Laura reads my blog everyday and knew a frightenly amount of info about me. I felt like I was spending time with a fan, which is a good feeling indeed. Of course, by the time friday ended I had become a major fan of Lauras too.
Went to an AA meeting on Newbury, then after a few failed attempts at finding a resturant to grab dinner at, we order Chinese and went back to Mikes to wait for him.
Saturday morning was another AA meeting, where I actually got to hear a guy use the word "pisser", a necessary Boston experience. Walked back through Beacon Hill, by John Kerry's House. with Mike, Laura and a very funny guy named Nick.( See Nick, you got a mention too) Ispent some time walking around the city, making a spiritual ammends of sorts. Boy did I walk, Back Bay, South End, Kendall Square, Downtown Crossing, Chinatown, Bay Village... covered it all.
Saturday Night was a bit of work, literally, I was there to work. Then platters of oysters on the half shell.mmmmmmmmmmmmm, there are no really good raw bars in Minnesota.
Sunday morning, AA, then a great brunch at the Garden of Eden on Tremont. Back to work, which was great, a very cool family and yes, Mike, you did an amazing job. The flight back was smooth and it felt good to sleep in my own bed with the boys.
I would love to find a way to move back to Boston, I really feel at home there.
Yesterday I went to a bbq at Art's, always a good time-croquet and pinatas. Could you ask for more?
It is good to be home.

An evening of rest

I have been a little overwhelmed with life as of late. Interpersonal conflict, work changes, family shit etc. has all raised my anxiety level. Last night I was supposed to be part of a good friends birthday dinner and I just did not have it in me to be at a social gathering, no matter how much I care for this guy. So I bowed out and spent the evening taking care of myself.
I still struggle with guilt when I put myself first, even when it is my mental and/or spiritual well-being which I am putting first. I know that I have to take care of myself in order to be of service to others( I know this because it is what I tell others and I am a very wise man). The paradox of course is that one of the greatest things I do to care for myself is to be of service to others. Maybe trying to figure that out is what is causing me all this anxiety, hmmm.
Anyhow, it is a beautiful morning, the sun is finally shining in Minnesota, if only for a short while. I am going to Boston, my favorite city in the US tomorrow. I have good friends. I am sober today. My life frigging rocks!
Right?

Hello Copley Square!

I just found out that I am off to Boston this weekend. I spent some amazing years there, and some that were not all that great. I am looking forward to getting back there, if only for a couple of days.

The difference between a cow and a bean is a bean can begin an adventure

I have been transferring all my cd's to my ipod. This has proven a great investment. It is a blast rediscovering old songs. I tend to keep the same cd's in play at home. Mellow stuff, Chet Baker, Saint Etienne, etc. I am falling in love with all my showtunes over again.
Damn I am gay.

Good Weekend

Crazy busy weekend.
Saw Star Wars on Friday, was rather unimpressed. Sure it was big, and lots of cool stuff blew up, but the plot was pretty non-existant. I sent most of the movie wondering how they were going to wrap things up.
Saturday I went to a great NA meeting. Most of my recovery is at AA, but I do love NA. There is an urgency at meetings that I sometimes forget.
Sunday I went house hunting. Looked at a condo in the Chicago, which used to be a Sears. Great views, actually a cool space, but I am apprehensive about the neighborhood and some of the plans they have for the building. I got to wear a hard hat though, that was fun.

Jim, It's Your Birthday

Wonderful time last night with my friends. Richard opened his beautiful house, Bahaa made the lasagna that I love, it really was a wonderful evening.
I used to make a very big deal out of my birthday, always taking the day off work( part of me still believes that my birthday should hold national holiday status). When I first got sober, there was a guy named Chris, who at that time had been sober for a couple of years(sadly he is not sober today, from what I hear he is in Dallas, good thoughts go out to him). Anyway Chris was a nurse at the treatment center I went to, and while I was in primary care he celbrated his birthday. After blowing out his cake he talked about how in sobriety he could not afford to make a huge deal out of days like birthdays. They were "just another day". I try to keep that in mind, keep my expectations to a minimum(that way they are always exceeded).
My greatest gift today is my sobriety. Although Lindsay just gave me a cake, that runs a close second!

Birthday Eve

Tomorrow is my birthday. I am going to be 39 years old. I can remember when 39 seemed ancient, and I am sure to a lot of people it still does, but I don't feel all that different than I did 20 years ago. Except that I am not drunk, or high right now. Actually, 20 years ago I probably felt worse.
A sponsee and friend, one and the same person, took me out to dinner last night after my home group to celebrate my birthday. We went to Mojito and had a wonderful time.
Tonight Dan, Fabian and a bunch of my friends are throwing a supper for me. This may seem like a normal everyday thing to happen, friends acknowledging each others milestones, but for me it is a gift of my sobriety. For such a long time I isolated and just didn't have people in my life who could see beyond themselves, that is the greatest gift. Of course I will still be accepting gifts from ALL my friends tonight, I mean it would be rude not to.

Rainy Days and Tuesdays Always Get Me Down

I am really getting tired of this damp dreay cold weather. My goal of forcing summer is becoming harder and harder. Today I had to wear long pants! And a sweater! What is up with that. Someone please do something about the lousy weather, it is getting me down.
I was sitting at Vera's Coffee Shop with my friend Linus last night. There was a guy at the table next to us who was pretending to read a book, glancing around the room, turning the pages without actually looking at the book, it was quite amusing. Anyhow, we started talking and he was explaining how his life works to me. He had gone to treatment in October, didn't really like AA ( I never get that) and had ended up shooting meth and passing out on city buses while living with his 72 year old father.
Now, THAT is living!
You can definately add that one to my gratitude list.
Speaking of Gratitude, my friend Steve called, sleeping in his truck was not as awesome as he had thought it would be. I am working to find a treatment program for him.

Life, it doesn't always go the way you want it to

I had a difficult weekend. An old friend got very drunk and I sat with him talking about solutions. He decided that the best solution was to live in his car.
I am so grateful that I am not in that space today.
Other than that life was good this weekend. I bought myself an ipod, but more on that later. I have to get to work.

It is the weekend!

It has been a good, long, full week and I am ready for the weekend!
I watched ER last night. It is hard to think about having a crush on Noah Wylie for the past 11 years and now he is leaving the show. Oh Dr Carter, the things we have been through together. During the run of ER both Carter and I went to treatment and got sober, we have had relationships, good and bad. Carter went to Africa to fight revolutionaries and came back with a pregnant fiancee, I went to Dallas to see my friend Brian and came back with a fabulous pair of Paper Demin jeans.
God, we are practically the same person.

Scared Little Breeder

I have a straight friend(well we question that, but we will take him at his word). Recently while on a business trip he found himself needing a little "relief" so he went to a dirty book store for the first time. He was shocked to see that there were 50-60 men roaming the halls, looking either to lend a hand or have a hand lent. OK, they were probably looking to lend more than a hand, but this is a PG blog, alright PG-13.
He high-tailed it out of the bookstore, $5 worth of tokens still jingling in his pocket, the aching need for relief suddenly gone.
hee-hee, silly breeder.

wednesday morning

Ran into an old "friend" at a meeting last night. We used together a lot and spent a good deal of time doing the things that two men using meth together do(and I am not talking about cleaning).
I don't spend much time with people that I used with, most of them are either still using, or dead. He is in treatment now, and I wish him the best, but don't really want to have him be a big part of my life. This may sound a little selfish, but I need to take care of my own sobriety first, right.
Other than that, great night last night. My friend Colin was feeling a little blue, so he came over and chatted for a while, then crashed in the guest room. I like having space to havce people come over.
Hazelden is offering a Lesbian/Gay Celebration of Recovery Retreat I think I may take a weekend and do this. Anyone want to join me?

In here, Life is beautiful

I had a great opprotunity to tell my story last night at Hazelden. A bunch of my friends came up to offer moral support, and keep my ego in check afterward. It really brought home just how full my life is today.
My friend Andrew gave me a new Livestrong bracelet for Frank. He was a little leary of it at first, I am sure that it smelled a little different than his old one, but once Henry showed any interest in it Frank took ownership. This morning when I woke up Frank was sitting on the bed with that yellow thing dangling from his mouth. I have replaced the heating duct, so all things should be good.

This is why I stay
Laughter
Then I began to see the miracles that happen only in AA.
People who would nearly crawl in the doors, sick and broken,
and who in a few weeks of meetings
and not drinking one day at a time
would get their health back,
find a little job and friends who really cared,
and then discover a God in their lives.
But the most compelling part of AA,
the part that made me want to try this sober thing,
was the laughter, the pure joy of the laughter
that I heard only from sober alcoholics.

What a great weekend!

Good times this weekend, good times.
Saturday morning I had a bunch of friends over for breakfast before garage saling. It was fun walking around with good friends, buying stuff I really do not need.
Saturday night I went to a glbt in recovery fundraiser. Arliss G spoke, an amazing woman from Tulsa OK. Funny, sad inspirational.
Speaking of inspirational, my friend Bart turned 40 this past week and we had a little bbq for him on sunday. Bart has been through some amazing thigs in the last year and is really a hero of mine. Today he celebrates one year sober, so send him a little love.
Spring is here! The air is heady with lilacs, I love this time of year.

That's Right MOFO
Microsoft Reverses, Will Back Gay Rights By ELIZABETH M. GILLESPIE, Associated Press Writer
11 minutes ago
SEATTLE - After being criticized for quietly dropping support for a state gay rights bill, Microsoft Corp. chief executive Steve Ballmer told employees Friday that management would publicly back such legislation in the future.
Ballmer's commitment came two weeks after activists accused the company of caving to pressure from an evangelical pastor who had threatened to launch a nationwide boycott of the software company.
"After looking at the question from all sides, I've concluded that diversity in the workplace is such an important issue for our business that it should be included in our legislative agenda," Ballmer wrote in an e-mail.
In late April, Lorri L. Jean, CEO of the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center, asked Microsoft to return a civil rights award the group had given the company four years ago. On Friday she said Microsoft should keep the honor.
"Few of us have not made a misstep. This was a misstep. It was a big one. But Microsoft has done the right thing, and we would be proud to have them keep our award," Jean told The Associated Press.
Ballmer said he would not discuss what prompted Microsoft to take a neutral stance this year on a bill it had actively supported in the past.
Microsoft, one of the first companies to extend domestic partner benefits to same-sex couples, claimed that its decision came before a meeting with Ken Hutcherson, pastor of a local church who has organized anti-gay-marriage rallies in Seattle and Washington, D.C.
Hutcherson could not immediately be reached for comment Friday. He has said he pressured Microsoft after hearing two employees testify in favor of a bill before the state Legislature that would have banned discrimination against gays in housing, employment and insurance.
The bill died by a single vote in the state Senate April 21.
Liberal bloggers called the company a corporate coward and posted rallying cries for their own boycott of Microsoft products. Gay rights groups said they'd keep pressuring Microsoft until the company once again came out in support of the bill.
Sen. Val Stevens, a Republican from Arlington, Wash., said Friday she was disappointed Microsoft had changed its stance. "This is not a good place for a company the size and magnitude of Microsft to be (in) now," she said in a prepared statement. "I know it must be difficult for the employees who do not agree with their policy."
Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay rights group, applauded the shift.
"We are proud that Microsoft did the right thing and has come down squarely on the side of fairness for all employees," Solmonese said in a statement. "It is clear from Mr. Ballmer's statement that it is a business imperative to value a diverse workforce and support public policy that reinforces that principle."
In his e-mail Friday, Ballmer said the company would continue to focus its lobbying efforts on issues that most directly affect Microsoft, such as Internet safety, intellectual property rights, free trade and a healthy business climate.
"I'm proud of Microsoft's commitment to non-discrimination in our internal policies and benefits, but our policies can't cover the range of housing, education, financial and similar services that our people and their partners and families need.
"Therefore, it's appropriate for the company to support legislation that will promote and protect diversity in the workplace."
Microsoft shares slipped a penny to close at $25.22 in Friday trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Garage Sale Weekend

I love spring, and it seems as if spring has returned to Minnesota. This weekend the Bryn Mawr neighborhood(yuppie and guppie area)has their garage sale. This is really quite an occasion, hundreds of families lug all their crap out onto the sidewalk, front yards , driveways and in some cases even garages to unload it onto other families who will do the same later this season. It is fabulous.
I have some friends coming over at 7 tomorrow for a little breakfast, then we are off to buy things we neither need nor want.
Plus there are always cute boys walking around.
Damn, I love my life.

It's a small world

I had a surprise in the mail yesterday that really illustrated how small the internet has made the world and just how easy it is to locate people.
In my mailbox I found 3 manila envelopes sent from Iowa. I buy too much crap off of ebay, so I was trying to think what this could be. My birthday is 2 weeks from today(hint, hint), so I thought it may be an early birthday gift, but I do not know anyone in Iowa.
The envelopes contained 11 dvds, and a letter. It seems that Alan from Iowa City is a regular reader of both one gay at a time and my friend Dan's blog. Alan had made compliation dvds of coronation street, a very cool bbc soap, and various gay themed videos and knowing that Dan and I both greatly enjoy all things gay themed sent them off.
Now I love getting gifts and am looking forward to watching these, but there was something a little unsettling about the fact that from my blogging someone was able to find me in Minneapolis, especially since my last name does not appear on my blog. It is a reminder of just how small the world has become.
Thank you again Alan for the DVD's, Dan and I will sit down this weekend and watch them. I think I may get a PO Box and post that, I mean I want all of you to feel free to send me gifts, small or large, cash donations pretty much anything, excepting body parts and fluids.

a tiny opening

Frank, the cat, has one toy which is his and his alone, a Lance Armstrong bracelet. This morning we were enjoying a bit of play time, I was sitting on the bed, drinking coffee, watching KARE 11 Sunrise and tossing the bracelet, which Frank would run and bring back to me. A sweet morning ritual.
I am doing a lot of remodeling at my place and while moving some stuff around had dislodged a heating vent, creating an opening about 1/4 of an inch wide(I imagine you all know where this is going). Well, making a accidentally making a shot that would have brought Meadowlark Lemon to his feet I watched the LIVESTRONG bracelet richocet off a wall, hit the TV and slide smoothly through the 1/4 of an inch opening, disappearing into the bowels of the house.
Frank is devastated.
Where the fuck am I going to find another one of those stupid bracelets.
I am a bad daddy.

ugh, monday

I am at a point in my life where I am I am terribly overextended. I have a pretty demanding full time job, a really fun part time job(that starts at 6 am on saturday mornings) and an emotionally demanding and incredibly satisfying part time job on sunday night. They all have great benifts, financially, emotionally, socially, etc. But I am feeling a bit pulled in many directions. When I add to the mix that I have been trying to schedule a couple of dates for the past two weeks and keeping my meetings up!
Grant me the Serenity!
You know there are bigger problems though then having a life that is too full.
